Talk to the Boss
Your supervisor isn’t a mind reader, and he may assume that you want to leave at the end of your contract. As soon as you decide you would rather stay, let your boss know that you would be open to a long-term role. If you don’t get a firm answer right then, let some time pass and then check in again. Right before your contract ends, make a final brief pitch.
Show Your Skills
Make every moment of your contract count. Show the company why an extra employee is needed and why you’re the most logical person to fill that role. You’ll need to prove your case for bringing you on full-time, so work hard, go above and beyond, and stay both flexible and responsive.
Become Part of the Team
Make yourself indispensable to your coworkers as well as your boss. Steer well clear of office politics instead of building relationships with as many people as you can. Offer your help with projects. Be open and friendly. Join in social activities. Your goal is to become a strong part of the team.
Never Assume
No matter how long your contract is, you’re a temp until the day you sign full-time hiring paperwork. Don’t assume that you’ll be staying on, or you risk coming across as arrogant. Look at your contract as an extended interview for the role you want, and you’ll be far more likely to get the offer.
Contract work can be highly valuable in its own right, but if you happen to land in a place you would like to stay, it’s up to you to make it happen. Let your boss know what you want, make yourself indispensable, stay friendly with everyone, and never make assumptions.
