Virtually everyone struggles to create the perfect work-life balance. It seems like there just aren’t enough hours in the day to dedicate yourself to work while also taking care of your family, sleeping properly, eating well, and carving out time for a social life. While there is no secret sauce for creating the best work-life balance, these simple tips can help.
Put It on Your Schedule
Go from the assumption that if something isn’t on your schedule, it won’t happen. So don’t just schedule your work projects and Zoom meetings. Sit down with a calendar app every week and block out time for your workout, movie night with your family, or a gabfest with your friends.
Put Yourself First
Many people think self-care is selfish. So what? It’s okay to be selfish! Block out an hour or two a few days per week for “me time.” Then use that time to do whatever makes you feel happy, relaxed, and fulfilled. No need to plan out specific activities ahead of time, just give yourself time to focus on yourself. Remember, you’re no good to anyone else if you don’t put on your own oxygen mask first.
Leave Work at Work
Work-life balance will never happen until you put boundaries on work. Give yourself a reason to get out on time, such as a book club or dance class. Leave 20 or 30 minutes at the end of your workday to get organized and wrap up the day’s tasks. Tell people ahead of time when you will be leaving, so you don’t get caught up in something right before you head home.
When you’re off work, make sure you’re not working. Resist the urge to take work home or answer texts during your vacation. If necessary, talk to your boss to set boundaries.
Get a Handle on Chores
For many people, chores can throw off their entire balance. So find a way to handle them more efficiently. Consider getting your worst chore out of the way early in the week or plan out weeknight dinners that take no more than 30 minutes to prepare.
