Become a Safety Champion: Strengthening Workplace Safety Together
At OneSource Staffing, safety is more than a priority — it’s a responsibility we share with our clients and associates every single day. That’s why we’re excited to share information about OSHA’s new Safety Champions Program, designed to help employers develop and implement effective safety and health programs that truly make a difference.
What Is the Safety Champions Program?
The Safety Champions Program is a new initiative from OSHA aimed at helping employers build stronger safety and health programs to prevent:
-
Workplace injuries
-
Occupational illnesses
-
Workplace fatalities
The program is built around OSHA’s Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs and focuses on seven core elements that form the foundation of a strong safety culture.
The Seven Core Elements of an Effective Safety and Health Program

1. Management Leadership
Strong leadership sets the tone. When management visibly commits to safety, it reinforces its importance across the entire organization.
2. Worker Participation
Employees play a vital role in identifying hazards and improving workplace safety. Their involvement strengthens programs and outcomes.
3. Hazard Identification and Assessment
Proactively identifying potential hazards is key to preventing incidents before they occur.
4. Hazard Prevention and Control
Once hazards are identified, implementing effective controls reduces risks and protects workers.
5. Education and Training
Ongoing training ensures workers understand safety procedures, risks, and best practices.
6. Program Evaluation and Improvement
Safety programs should evolve. Regular evaluation helps organizations identify gaps and continuously improve.
7. Communication and Coordination
Clear communication between host employers, contractors, and staffing agencies is essential to ensure everyone is aligned on safety expectations and responsibilities.
Three Steps to Becoming a Safety Champion
The Safety Champions Program is structured into three self-guided steps:
-
Introductory
-
Intermediate
-
Advanced
Participants can move through each step at their own pace, making the program flexible and achievable for organizations of all sizes.
Additionally, participants may request a Safety Champion Special Government Employee (SGE) to assess their safety and health program and evaluate their progress at any stage. This provides valuable insight and expert feedback to help strengthen safety initiatives.
Why This Matters to OneSource Staffing
As a staffing agency, we understand the importance of strong communication and coordination between host employers and staffing partners. The Safety Champions Program reinforces the shared responsibility we all have in protecting workers.
By participating, employers can:
-
Strengthen their safety culture

-
Improve compliance and accountability
-
Demonstrate commitment to employee well-being
