What Should I Wear To My Video Interview?

With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging, a lot of companies have moved as many operations as possible online, including job interviews. But video technology can add a whole new level of stress to your interview, especially if you are not used to being on camera. One of the biggest decisions you may be grappling with is what to wear. Here are a few tips.

Don’t Overdo It

Naturally, you should dress similarly to how you would dress for an in person interview. If the position calls for business formal, then wear a suit. If it’s more casual, choose something like khakis and a sweater. Whatever you wear, though, remember that a camera picks up details in strange ways, so it’s more important than ever to keep it simple and classy.

Colors and Patterns

Very bright or dark colors tend to appear blurry on screen, while busy patterns become distorted and even dizzying. Stick to neutrals or pastels in solids or subtle patterns. Be careful not to choose clothes that are very close to your skin tone or the background in the room, or you could start to look like a floating head!

Jewelry

Sparkly, shiny, dangly jewelry tends to catch the light and create a disco ball effect. While this may not be noticeable in a face to face interview in a brightly lit office, it’s almost certain to be distracting on a video call. Edit your look down to one or two small pieces of jewelry that complement your outfit.

Comfort

It’s always best to dress comfortably for an interview. But it’s extremely important when you have a camera in your face, since any discomfort will be magnified. Make sure your clothes fit well and choose breathable fabrics that don’t show sweat. Also consider dressing more conservatively than usual, as the presence of a camera can make you feel more exposed.

Video interviews can feel particularly awkward, but dressing for success can help you maintain confidence. Wear a comfortable version of what you would wear if the interview was in person, and make sure your colors, patterns, and jewelry are not distracting. With a little bit of forethought, you will be able to take your mind off your outfit and focus solely on making a great impression.
