Striving for Better Work Life Balance

For many professionals, work is their main priority. Unfortunately, this can lead to an imbalance in their lives, affecting their performance over time, as well as their overall well-being. If you’ve pushed your own needs aside in order to meet goals – and continue to do so – you’ll burn out eventually. Instead, incorporate the following tips and strive for a better work-life balance:

How Can You Have a Better Work-Life Balance?

Unplug regularly.

With today’s technology, you can stay connected to the office from anywhere, anytime, 24/7. This isn’t necessarily healthy, though, when you’re aiming for work-life balance.

Instead, make sure you’re unplugging regularly, such as after you get home from the office. Give yourself the time and space to spend with your family, as well as do things you enjoy – all without constantly checking your phone or computer for work emails or updates.

Take a vacation.

According to a study conducted by the U.S. Travel Association, 52% of employees say they have unused vacation time left over at the end of the year. If you’re one of these people, it’s time for a vacation. Even taking a few long weekends can help you to restore balance to your life. Plus, with proper planning, you can take time off from work without stressing about burdening your co-workers with your tasks.

Create boundaries.

When you have no boundaries, it’s easy to burn out. You’re the one co-workers and your boss always turn to for a last-minute request or to fill a need on a hot project. However, this can cause stress and exhaustion.

Avoid this by creating boundaries and learning to say “no.” When you leave the office, don’t check your email until the next morning. If you’ve always been available during weekends and evenings, now’s the time to create new expectations around your limits in the workplace.

Focus on your physical health.

Make sure you get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, eat nutritious meals, and exercise regularly. These common-sense strategies can go a long way in improving the way you feel, physically and mentally. So re-prioritize your life and put your own needs and well-being at the top of the list. Even if you take just a few small steps at a time, you’ll be moving toward a healthier, more balanced life.

Look for a job you love.

If going to work is a hassle and headache every day, it’s time for a change. Look for a new job that’s a better fit for you. If you’re not interested or engaged in what you’re doing, this sense of dissatisfaction is going to bleed out into the rest of your life, impacting the quality of it. Plus, if your job is too demanding and draining you, or you work in a negative environment with toxic people, it’s also taking away from your well-being and time for a move.
