Why Your Body Language in an Interview Matters

During a job interview, you can have all the right answers, but still not get the job. The reason? One potential cause is your body language. Without effective body language, you could be coming across as lacking confidence and competency.

So, what exactly is body language, and how can you improve yours? Here’s what to know.

What is Body Language, and Why Does It Matter?

Body language is the way you communicate without talking. In other words, non-verbal communication. It includes all the facial expressions, gestures, and other body movements that can communicate in different ways to the people you are with.

During an interview, your body language can align with what you are saying, demonstrating to the hiring manager that you are a skilled and confident professional. Or, on the other hand, it can undermine what you’re saying if you have nervous twitches, don’t make eye contact, or demonstrate other bad body language habits.

How Can You Control Body Language?

If your body language could use a boost, the good news is that you can improve it with a little practice. Focus on these areas and even have a friend conduct a mock interview with you and record it. This way, you can see for yourself what still needs improvement.

Offer a confident handshake with eye contact.

These are the first signs a hiring manager will see that communicate to them whether or not you feel confident. So practice offering a firm, dry handshake and looking them in the eye to project confidence.

Keep your posture in check.

If you tend to slump, then this can come across poorly during a job interview. Practice sitting up straight and leaning slightly forward. This will make you appear engaged and interested in the conversation.

Avoid gestures and jitters.

Don’t twirl your hair, tap your foot or knee, or indulge in any other nervous jitters you might usually have. Instead, focus on self-control and avoid overdoing hand movements if you tend to talk with your hands.

The bottom line is that body language can say a lot more about you than your resume or interview answers. It’s why it’s critical to ensure yours communicates all the right things.
